Our approach

Good ideas for ordinary kitchens.

GALDREN explores the small decisions behind everyday meals: what to buy, what to make and what to prepare ahead.

We believe practical guidance should leave you with a useful next step. That might be checking a cupboard before shopping, adding variety to a familiar meal or preparing one component for tomorrow.

The collection is organised around these everyday moments. Its focus is flexible planning and approachable food, with space for different preferences and changing routines.

The guides are currently in development. The previews show our proposed topics, visual style and original sample text.

What a useful next step looks like

One small thing you can actually do.

Every chapter ends with something you could do this week, not a programme to follow for six. Three examples of the shape it takes.

  • You are about to do the food shop

    The next step

Open one cupboard and one shelf of the fridge before you write anything down.

Half a list is usually already at home. The other half is what you actually needed.

  • Dinner has felt the same for a fortnight

    The next step

Keep the meal and change one thing: something crunchy, something sharp, or herbs at the end.

Variety across the week does not mean cooking something new every night.

  • Tomorrow looks busy

    The next step

Choose one component, not a whole batch-cooking afternoon. Label it and note the date.

One prepared thing is the difference between cooking and ordering in.

Written to illustrate the format. These are examples of the prompts, not instructions for a particular household or diet.

Scope and sources

What we say, and what we leave to someone else.

Food advice goes wrong when it promises more than it can know about your kitchen, your week or your health. So we drew the lines first.

Where the food thinking sits

Alongside the Eatwell Guide, not instead of it

The NHS Eatwell Guide describes balance across your overall eating, considered across a day or a week. Our meal-building prompt is a practical starting point that sits next to it; it is not a replacement for that framework and not a prescribed plate proportion.

  • General education for adults, never personalised advice.
  • Not a service for allergies, medical conditions, pregnancy or children’s diets.
  • No nutrient calculations or tested recipes are claimed here.
  • Storage, chilling and reheating guidance is verified ingredient by ingredient before publication; not everything cooked keeps for a week.

What you will not find

No guilt and no guarantees

There are no good foods and bad foods here, and nothing in the collection is designed to make you feel behind.

  • No weight-loss promise, no detox, no clean-eating purity.
  • No hormone balancing and no treatment for any condition.
  • No invented credentials, endorsements, reviews or bestseller badges.
  • No countdowns and no crossed-out former prices: the prices are proposals, not an offer.

Convenience, everyday ingredients and flexibility are not our invention — plenty of good food writing works this way. What we are proposing is the packaging: three focused guides, each built around one question you actually ask yourself.

The notebook

Each guide ends with your own notes, not ours.

A meal-building notebook, a shopping notebook, a weekly prep notebook. They exist because the useful part is what worked in your kitchen: the combination you would make again, the bag of salad that went off every week, the one task that saved Tuesday.

That is also why there is no fixed plan to follow. Plans change, ingredients run out and some evenings call for something simple. A guide that cannot survive that is not much use on a Wednesday.

Where the collection stands

In development, and we say so on every page.

The three guides are being written. What you can read on this site is the proposed catalogue, the planned contents and an original sample from each guide. The book images are design mockups: the products are intended as digital PDF downloads, with no physical delivery.

Purchasing opens only once the manuscripts are complete and reviewed, any timings and food-safety guidance are verified against current official advice, final prices and page counts are confirmed, seller policies are published and the actual digital delivery has been tested. Until then, nothing here is an instant download.

Everyday food. A little more thought.
